Why Is This Unique?
First discovered in 2017 in Indonesia, petrified opalized wood like you see here is already mined out – the only way you can get your hands on it is finding old collections. Like many gems, the first excavated material was the best, with lines of translucent and incredible blue hues. What you see here is a tan exterior layer, which was actually the natural bark of the tree, turned into stone over millions of years. The inside of the tree rotted away and was replaced by opal silica, which in turn was infiltrated by copper, which changed it into the vibrant Caribbean palette. Different grades of blue are based on how much copper dissipates into the material.
